Consonance and Dissonance of Simultaneous Trichords in Western Music
نویسندگان
چکیده
Previous empirical studies have suggested that the perceived consonance/dissonance (C/D) of a musical chord depends on its psychoacoustic smoothness (lack roughness), spectral harmonicity (perceptual fusion), and/or familiarity. We tested dependence C/D and in hearing experiment included all 19 possible trichords pitch-class set theory. In each trial, listener heard (duration: 300 or 500 ms) rated an 11-point scale. Each trichord was presented 10 times: 4 times constructed from octave-complex tones (OCTs, sounding like electronic organ) 6 natural piano tones. OCT different transpositions. The chords were close open position, root position 1st/2nd inversion (2 levels spacing x 3 = voicing). found no main effect timbre (OCT versus piano) interaction between timbre. Results correlated closely with predictions simple models roughness harmonicity. model performed better, other. A combined not superior to alone. results consistent multifactorial chord, factors being roughness, harmonicity,

متن کاملInfants’ Perception of Consonance and Dissonance in Music
The origins of the perception of consonance and dissonance in music are a matter of debate. The present study examined the hypothesis of an innate preferential bias favoring consonance over dissonance by exposing 4 month old infants to consonant and dissonant versions of two melodies. Infants looked significantly longer at the source of sound and were less motorically active to consonant compar...
متن کاملConsonance/dissonance – a Historical Perspective
This paper looks at the various approaches as taken in order to understand the phenomenon of consonance/dissonance. While an early understanding of consonance/dissonance was based upon number ratios (Pythagoras), it became a question of resonance for Descartes. Subsequently, Euler attempted to formalize the ratio approach by classifying intervals into consonance/dissonance classes according to ...
متن کاملComputational Approach to Musical Consonance and Dissonance
In sixth century BC, Pythagoras discovered the mathematical foundation of musical consonance and dissonance. When auditory frequencies in small-integer ratios are combined, the result is a harmonious perception. In contrast, most frequency combinations result in audible, off-centered by-products labeled “beating” or “roughness;” these are reported by most listeners to sound dissonant. In this p...
